Self-consistent dynamics of a Josephson junction in presence of an
arbitrary environment

We derive microscopically the d.c. Josephson effect in a superconducting tunnel junction in presence of an arbitrary electromagnetic environment. Doing this we extend to superconducting junctions the so-called P(E) theory (see e.g. Ingold and Nazarov, arXiv:cond-mat/0508728) that accurately describes the interaction of a non-superconducting tunnel junction with its environment. This leads to the formulation of a self-consistent electromagnetic response of the junction in which this non-linear element is properly combined with the rest of the circuit. When the phase fluctuations are small the general self-consistent problem can be solved by using the exact linear response of the junction.
